The Pink Tea Cup to Close After 55 Years
That’s just the way the cornbread crumbles…
According to a tipster, a new sign in the window of Pink Tea Cup, the Village’s 55 year-old soul-food staple, announces that “after over 50 years in the Village, the Pink Tea Cup will close on January 3, 2010,” and a call to the restaurant confirms.
Interestingly enough, a look at tonight’s Community Board 2 meeting reveals a new entity is already applying for a liquor license at the space.
Known for serving mammoth portions for a low price day and night, the Pink Tea Cup has long been a spot for the locals, the tourists, and lower level celebs like Liz Smith, Star Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, and the occaisional CEO.
Opened by Florida native Mary Raye in 1954, the restaurant was taken over by her husband Charles in 1979, moved to its final location in ‘82 and then given to her niece and grandniece ‘89.
Fans, there’s a month left. Get those sweet potatoes, biscuits, and collard greens while they’re still around.

The star added he was also looking forward to meeting Whoopi Goldberg, who he described as “my Oprah”.
“I know most people who are performing apart from Chaka Khan and Whoopi Goldberg,” he explained. “Whoopi Goldberg’s my Oprah – I think she’s absolutely amazing.
“I think she’s going to take over Oprah’s throne. She’s brilliant – I’ve loved her since I was a little kid.”

You may know some Russians (perhaps beautiful Russian women), or you may have some Russian roots yourself. It can be surprising and interesting to learn about some American celebrities who share Russian heritage.
Whoopi Goldberg, real name Sama Karin Johnson, may be one of the least people you would have guessed to have Russian roots. Yet, Whoopi’s great-grandmother on the maternal side was born in Russia and lived there.
Queen in Blackpool for Variety Show

The Queen is due to be entertained by some of the world’s top talent at the Royal Variety Performance.
Peter Kay will host the spectacular at the Opera House in Blackpool, a resort famous as the home of British variety.
Closing the show will be controversial pop singer Lady Gaga, who covered herself in fake blood after pretending to stab herself live on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this year.
Hollywood stars Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg, X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, Britain’s Got Talent champions Diversity, teen star Miley Cyrus and classical singer Katherine Jenkins will also perform for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
The monarch was also present in Blackpool for the only other time the show was staged in the seaside town – in 1955.
George Formby, Arthur Askey, Reginald Dixon and a young Morecambe and Wise topped the bill on that occasion.
The Opera House is the largest theatre outside London, and will host 3,000 people for the charity gala evening.
Proceeds from the show will go to the Entertainment Artists’ Benevolent Fund, which cares for entertainers who need help as a result of old age, ill health, or hard times.

During a Hot Topics segment the ladies of The View talk about the recent Tiger Woods drama involving his alleged affair and how his wife attacked him. When Barbara Walters asks Whoopi how she feels about the subject she responds with ” I am bored out of my Gourd”. She then gets frustrated and attempts to walk off-set.

Patrick Swayze died today after a long battle with cancer. He was 57. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008. His publicist says he died with his family at his side. He was the star of such movies as “Ghost,” “Dirty Dancing,” and “Road House.” Swayze was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1991.

Whoopi Goldberg: Was the moon landing a hoax?
This morning on “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg celebrated the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 by sharing a little cup of crazy. Noting that she’s a fan of “Capricorn One,” the 1978 film about a faked landing on Mars, she goes on to offer a few favorites from the conspiracy theorist handbook: “Who shot the footage?” she asks, and no, she doesn’t appear to be kidding. “Why is the flag rippling? There’s no air.” Barbara Walters gently redirects her with the patience of a woman who spent years arguing with Star Jones, but the brief segment makes two things clear: Whoopi is apparently a little more unhinged than we realized.
