At long last, Madea returns to the big screen in TYLER PERRY’S MADEA GOES TO JAIL. This time America’s favorite irreverent, pistol-packin’ grandmomma is raising hell behind bars and lobbying for her freedom…Hallelujer!

After a high-speed freeway chase puts Madea (TYLER PERRY) in front of the judge, her reprieve is short-lived as anger management issues get the best of her and land her in jail. A gleeful Joe (TYLER PERRY) couldn’t be happier at Madea’s misfortune. But Madea’s eccentric family members the Browns (DAVID and TAMALA MANN) rally behind her, lending their special “country” brand of support.

Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway (DEREK LUKE) is on the fast track to career success. But Hardaway lands a case too personal to handle – defending young prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington (KEISHA KNIGHT PULLIAM) – and asks his fiancée and fellow ADA Linda Holmes (ION OVERMAN) to fill in on his behalf. Later on the streets Ellen meets Candace with her friend Donna (Vanessa Ferlito) (another prostitute), to whom she tells “I’m still waiting”. When Ellen leaves, Candace asks what she meant. Donna says for her to get off the streets. Donna and Candace then make a deal: if Donna gets off the streets so does Candace. One of Donna’s boyfriends finds them, sexually assaults Candace, and declares himself her pimp.

After Candace escapes him (through the bathroom window of the motel room where he took her), she calls Joshua, who brings her back to his place while Linda is asleep on his bed. When Linda finds Candace asleep on the couch in her robe, an apparently jealous Linda gets angry at Joshua, accuses him of having an affair with Candace, which Joshua denies, and storms out after the two argue.

Madea, for her part, is still struggling with anger management issues. She runs a man off the road – in the minivan Cora is driving at the time while taking Madea to an anger management counseling session, which is run by Dr. Phil (as himself). A frustrated Dr. Phil ends up throwing Madea out of his office. After another incident in the parking lot of a Kmart store, where a car is slammed upside down with a forklift operated by Madea out for revenge.  Madea makes a quick get away as the hysterical and outraged woman calls her husband a police officer. A SWAT team is dispatched to Madea’s house and they arrest Madea. This leads directly to the aforementioned 5-year sentence handed down by Judge Mathis.

While waiting for Candace (who never shows up) outside the court house, Ellen asks Josh how he knows Candace. He says they grew up together, and then went to the same college where she was made fun of by his college friends so she started to embarrass him. One night when he took her to a party, he ended up leaving with a date leaving Candace at the party, where the friends gang raped her, something Joshua feels extreme guilt for. Josh asks Ellen if she could try to help Candace out. She agrees and gets her a job interview, where the interviewer makes an unwelcome sexual advance towards Candace, asking her just how badly she wants this job, and says he’s seen her file so this should be nothing new. Candace gives it to him in the groin and storms out, telling Ellen “Your Christian help ain’t so Christian”, and walks away.

Candace shows up outside Josh’s apartment later, apparently undergoing withdrawal symptoms from drugs. Josh, coming home after a night out with Linda, brings Candace in his apartment, covering her with a blanket and reassuring her, which angers Linda (who strongly disapproves of any help Josh is giving to Candace because she is a prostitute), saying he’s never been like that for her, and she storms out. Josh tries to go after her, but Candace begs him to stay with her.

Later at the district attorney’s office, Joshua’s friend Chuck (another lawyer in the office) runs into Linda, whom he discovers is falsifying Candace’s file to deliberately get her sent to jail, and apparently has been doing this with other defendants as well. Linda tells him to keep his mouth shut or she’ll tell the head ADA that Chuck cheated (on his bar exam) to get his job.

Candace, having run away from Josh’s apartment, is back on the streets working her “job”, and gets picked up by an undercover cop.

When Candace ends up in jail, she discovers Donna also in jail. Madea is also in jail, adjusting to her cellmate, T.T., who makes “Brownies for her Brownie” and is in jail for killing 18 men. Madea befriends Candace, protecting her in a “motherly” way as only Madea can (i.e., beating up a fellow inmate that was trying to come on to Candace). Candace, Madea, and Donna all attend a class taught by Ellen at the jail, mostly to get time off of their sentences.

After about five months of jail time, only on Joshua’s wedding day does Chuck, who is Joshua’s best man at the wedding, finally get up the nerve to tell Joshua the truth as to why Candace actually went to jail.

During the wedding ceremony, when it’s time for Joshua to say his vows to Linda, he tells the entire congregation, with their boss in attendance, that Linda has been falsifying records to get convictions. Josh leaves a stunned Linda at the altar; still in his wedding tuxedo, he then rushes to the jail where he kisses Candace and admits that he loves her.

The movie opens at a Catholic elementary school in 1968. A young girl, revealed to be the film’s main character, is warned against heading down the wrong path due to her behavior in class.

The girl is Deloris Van Cartier, a struggling lounge singer in Reno, Nevada, dating a married mobster, Vince LaRocca, and she is oblivious to his criminal activities. But the relationship sours after an argument, and later Deloris witnesses him shoot his limo driver, who had been supposedly giving information to the police.

Deloris manages to escape to the police and informs them that she is willing to testify against Vince; Lt. Eddie Souther is put in charge of keeping her safe.

Deloris reluctantly goes into hiding as a nun in a Catholic convent in San Francisco, California, where she wears a habit and is given the name “Sister Mary Clarence”.

Reverend Mother, who takes an instant dislike to Deloris, is only pacified by promises of funds for the neglected church, while Deloris herself chafes at the austere lifestyle of the convent and grates on the nerves of the Abbess, who puts her in the convent’s (lackluster and off-key) choir to keep her out of trouble; but this is where she shines, taking over the choir and putting a new touch on old songs.

She has the choir swinging and singing to gospel renditions of hymns (“Hail Holy Queen”), and soul music adapted to have religious themes (for example, Mary Wells’ “My Guy” changed into “My God”). Despite Reverend Mother’s protests, she brings new vigor into the convent and leads it in cleaning up the surrounding neighborhood. Her efforts draw a lot of attention, even from Pope John Paul II himself. Meanwhile, Deloris is finding peace and purpose.

The scheme is uncovered by Vince and Deloris is kidnapped by Vince’s goons, to Eddie’s dismay; but after explaining the situation to the other nuns, they agree to help. Meanwhile, Vince orders Deloris killed; she remains calm, making Vince and company rattled, and subsequently escapes.

The group of nuns survive the final conflict with Vince and he is arrested. The victorious nuns return to San Francisco for the Pope’s concert. Deloris eventually returns to her successful singing career.

The film is set in Montgomery, Alabama, United States, during the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, and features Goldberg as Odessa Cotter, an African-American maid, employed by a well-to-do white woman, Miriam Thompson, played by Spacek.

The story is told through the eyes of Miriam’s young daughter Mary Catherine, for whom Odessa is a nanny.

Odessa and her family are faced with all of the social problems typical of African Americans at the time: poverty, racism, violence, and discrimination based solely on the color of their skin. When a boycott of the city buses prevents Odessa from riding the bus to work, she is left with no other choice but to walk. Her employer, Miriam Thompson, offers to give her a ride two days a week in order to ensure she makes it to work on time and alleviate the effect the “long walk home” is having on her.

However, as the boycott progresses, tensions rise and giving Odessa a ride to work becomes an issue with the white prominent members of her community, as well as with her husband. One of the three GM “old-look” transit buses used in this film was the actual Montgomery Bus Lines bus #2857 that Rosa Parks was riding in when she was famously arrested. The bus was in poor condition by the time the film was made. It was given a partial repaint and was towed by a cable for its scenes in the movie.

What people are saying:

Wow !  This movie should be shown to every White person over the age of 16! The reason I say that is because it tells the cold, hard truth of what Blacks had to go through back in the 60’s and it’s not sugarcoated at all. It’s not being said to make people feel guilty over something that they probably never took part in, but to educate people in what most public school systems DON’T teach about. As someone of primarily Native American descent who considers themselves pretty educated about Black history, I myself was very shocked and saddened at the brutality that Black Americans had to face (and still do at times). A picture (or movie) is worth a thousand words. This movie would be educational to everyone who views it. I would definitely recommend this movie to others. (mEnTaL_hOpScOtCh from Florida)

I’m a freshman in high school, and at the moment, we’re studying the chronicles of civil rights in my history class. My teacher showed this film to us, and it excited me at first, ’cause I’ve always thought Whoopi Goldberg was awesome and I’ve always enjoyed her films. This was no exception. Movies shown in school tend to be boring, bland and uninteresting. So most of the time, when movies are shown, we take it as an opportunity to catch up on sleep. This movie however, kept our heads up the entire time. We were interested, intrigued, and dying to know what would happen next. It was both thought provoking, entertaining, awe inspiring, and it’s even to safe to say, highly addictive. My teacher showed the film in 40 minutes intervals, as this how long each class period is and we were always stuck in our seats after the bell rang, wanting to watch more. There is nothing subtle about this slow paced story. It is forceful and frank. The overt hatred by Southern whites toward Blacks is palpable. In no character is this odious racial superiority more evident than in Miriam’s cigar chomping brother-in-law, Tunker. Technically well made, “The Long Walk Home” has value mostly as historical perspective on an important contemporary social issue. In eighth grade, my history teacher showed us a movie called “The Long Walk Home”. Usually, movies in history class could put you right to sleep. However, this one was much, much different. For the first time, everyone in class was awake and watching the television screen. It was an amazing movie that really helped us better understand what life was like during the bus boycott. I had never thought that blacks would have trouble getting rides then–I just never thought about it from someone else’s angle before. This movie really helped me understand a different time period. When the bell rang to go to next period, most of the class stayed and lingered a few minutes to catch the end of the movie. A few of us even had tears in our eyes. I teach in a small town where the majority of the students are Caucasian. After watching the Long Walk Home for the first time, I began a search to buy it for my personal collection. I use this movie every year after the unit on the Civil Rights Movement. This movie shows students what can be accomplished if everyone is willing to make the necessary sacrifices and work together.

It also shows them that this was not an easy task. It was more than just giving a speech or refusing to sit in the back of the bus. It was making the commitment to walk to work, the store, everywhere.. regardless of the number of blisters on the feet or how early the walk had to begin.

I am a big fan of Whoopi’s, and while they did not seem to be two of her more popular movies, The Long Walk Home and Sarafina were two of her best. While I was out on disability, my movie, The Long Walk Home, disappeared. If anyone knows where I can get a replacement of her movie, I would definitely appreciate hearing from them.  (bsmmay from U.S.)

I’ve never quite understood why this movie was never a success. It has all the great qualities and ingredients that one looks for in a good drama. Historical or not. Aside from “The Color Purple”,this is one of Whoopi Goldbergs finest movies.She certainly should have gotten an Oscar for this role (which would have made more sense to me than winning from her smaller role in “Ghost”). Sissy Spacek played a good role. It wasn’t right for black people, to be treated, because they’re different. They should have the same rights, to ride the bus, vote and attend school. The 1960’s were when the civil rights took place. The country was changing. Blacks have always voted here in Arkansas, even before my time. I didn’t like Sissy’s husband’s brother, who was a bigot. I saw this movie on a movie channel today after been sick off work, it really got me hooked and gave me a good insight of what life was like back then and the big difference of white/black people. I watched the movie “The Long Walk Home” in a class of mine. At first I thought how boring this movie was going to be, but as I watched I found myself getting quite disgusted with how people acted. After watching this movie I give more respect to African Americans then I had before. I knew that they had gone through some hard times but I never actually knew just how bad it was. I believe that everyone should see this movie, you’ll be surprised how deeply it touches you. “The Long Walk Home” brings history back to life in reasonable and wonderfully detailed way. The acting is strong, dialog good, the sets and costuming some of the most thorough I’ve ever seen. Women have to take off their clip earring before speaking on the telephone. They leave lipstick on the edge of their Russel Wright coffee cup. THIS was the movie she should have been nominated for; in the BEST ACTRESS category. This was one of the finest performances of the year, and definitely of Ms. Goldberg’s career. Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen are a happy and loving couple living in New York City. The only problem in their relationship is Sam’s apparent discomfort with saying “I love you” to his girlfriend, only responding to her saying it with “ditto”. This bothers Molly, who feels she needs to hear him say “I love you” in return.

One night, while walking back to their new apartment after going to the theatre, they encounter a thief named Willy Lopez He pulls a gun and Sam is shot. Sam chases Willy, but loses him; when he returns to Molly, he sees her cradling his own corpse, and realizes that he is now a ghost, trapped between worlds. Lights descend to take him away, but he flees.

Sam realizes that the robbery was planned when Willy sneaks into the house and rifles through his belongings. Sam follows Willy home and learns that his close friend and co-worker, Carl Bruner, hired Willy to rob Sam in the apparent robbery that went wrong in order to get his office computer password; Carl is involved in a money laundering deal at the bank where he and Sam worked. Sam had recently changed his computer password, locking Carl out of the phony accounts where Carl had stashed the money. Sam lashes out in frustration at his supposed best friend, but realizes that, as a ghost, he can do little.

Sam fears that Molly is in danger but is helpless, unable to communicate with her in his spiritual form. As fate has it, however, he encounters Oda Mae Brown, a con artist posing as a medium who ironically discovers (through hearing Sam say that her business is a “crock of shit”) that she really does have her family’s power to hear ghosts, though she cannot see them. Seeing her as his only hope of communicating with Molly, Sam endlessly pesters Oda Mae until she eventually gives in and agrees to help him.

Oda Mae reluctantly calls Molly and tells her she is communicating with Sam, but Molly is understandably skeptical. Molly is convinced only when Oda Mae tells her several private things that only Sam could know, most importantly Sam’s use of the word “ditto”.

–

Sam encounters a troubled ghost haunting the Subway, who teaches him how to touch and move objects by focusing his emotions on his intended target. He also learns that Oda Mae is now being plagued by ghosts coming from as far away as New Jersey to speak to their living relatives. One briefly possesses her, but it is seen that this greatly saps a ghost’s energy. He promises that she will no longer be bothered if she helps him.

Meanwhile, Molly visits the police, having become quite skeptical of Oda Mae’s claims. The desk sergeant assures her that she’s right to be suspicious, as there’s no file on any ‘Willy Lopez’ — but there is an amazingly large file on Oda Mae Brown, who is well-known to local police as a huckster and small-time fraud.

Sam and Oda Mae move to thwart Carl’s plan. Carl had stolen $4 million and put it in a fraudulent account. Under Sam’s instructions, Oda Mae poses as ‘Rita Miller’ — the name on the account – to withdraw the money, and grudgingly gives the large cheque to two nuns collecting for charity. Carl panics when he realizes the account has been closed, and is tormented by Sam, who, invisible, behaves like a poltergeist and types the word “MURDERER” on his computer.

Carl traces the missing money and ends up at Molly’s door, asking about Oda Mae. Molly slips and reveals that Oda Mae was Rita Miller, and that she knows about the secret ’slush fund’ that Carl has been frantically trying to access. Carl realizes that Sam’s ghost is present and tells him he will be back to kill Molly if he doesn’t get the money back. Sam runs off to warn Oda Mae, but Willy arrives soon after. Oda Mae and her sisters escape as Sam terrorizes Willy, prompting Willy to run out into the street in a panic. Willy is hit by a truck, but only realizes he is dead when he sees his own corpse. As he does so, the shadows around him rise from the ground and take the shape of demons, which drag him into darkness as his screams echoes away .

Molly is still unsure about Oda Mae, but she is convinced after Oda Mae agrees to let Sam use her body. Sam then uses Oda Mae’s body to share a passionate moment with Molly, but an outraged Carl storms in and threatens to kill Molly and Oda Mae if he does not get his money. Sam is forcefully ejected from Oda Mae’s body and tries to stop Carl, but, as seen before, the possession has left him drained.

Molly and Oda Mae escape to a loft above the apartment, with Carl in pursuit. He tries desperately to catch up with the women and finally gets to Oda Mae, pulling out a gun. Molly comes to Oda Mae’s defense, but Carl overpowers her and he takes her hostage instead. Sam’s energy is restored and he forces Carl to throw the gun away, enabling Molly to escape unharmed. Fighting in vain to stop Sam’s attacks, Carl foolishly swings a hanging hook at him. The hook completely misses Sam and swings back, shattering an open window, which falls and kills Carl while he is trying to escape. Sam expresses regret as the demons take Carl’s terrified spirit away.

When Sam returns to Oda Mae and Molly, Molly can hear and see him, as he has assumed a partly visible form. After saying a final goodbye to Oda Mae, he tells Molly he loves her, to which she responds with “ditto”. Sam then walks off into the bright light to heaven, saying “It’s amazing Molly. The love inside, you take it with you. Goodbye, Molly”. Sam then walks to heaven and Molly’s final words are, “See ya..”. the screen then fades to black.

• When it came time to cast the film, writer Bruce Joel Rubin suggested Patrick Swayze for the role of Sam Wheat. Director Jerry Zucker felt that Swayze was completely wrong for the part. Many actors that included Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Kevin Bacon, Al Pacino, Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin were all offered the part but all turned it down feeling that playing a ghost would be cheesy. Zucker then decided to audition Swayze though he thought he would blow the audition. To Zucker’s surprise, Swayze did a great audition and he was cast immediately in the part.
• The scene where Whoopi Goldberg meets two nuns is very prophetic. A couple of years after Ghost, Goldberg played a nun in Sister Act (1992). One year later, she repeated the role in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).
• Meg Ryan turned down the part of Molly.
• Producers originally offered the role of Sam to Bruce Willis, Demi’s husband at the time. But he turned it down, because he didn’t think the film would work.
• The subway scenes were filmed on the abandoned lower level of the 42nd St. station of the IND 8th Ave. line. Trains appearing in the film wrong railed through the station; that is, they ran in the opposite direction of normal operation.

Clara’s Heart is a 1988 movie starring Kathleen Quinlan and Whoopi Goldberg.

The movie tells the story of a family in crisis. The mother, Leona, escapes to Jamaica to grieve the loss of her baby daughter. While there she meets kindly housekeeper Clara Mayfield.

Clara pulls Leona out of her depression with a blunt, no-nonsense style. Leona is so taken with her that she brings Clara back to the States, Baltimore to be exact, to be housekeeper and nanny to young son David, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

At first he is resistant and sees her as an intruder. But as the parents are completely wrapped up in their own grief and dissolving marriage, David comes to trust Clara and to depend on her.
